Topic: Finding meaning on the tenure track: the development of an action-oriented research program on gender-based violence
Dr. Alexa Yakubovich is a social epidemiologist whose mixed-methods research program aims to advance a rigorous understanding of what causes and can prevent violence against women and gender-based violence more broadly. She is currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University and Affiliate Scientist with Nova Scotia Health and the MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions at Unity Health Toronto. In addition, Dr. Yakubovich serves as an Associate Scientist with the Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit, a Scholar at the Healthy Populations Institute, and a Research Fellow at the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research. She is actively engaged in multi-sector research that informs service design and policy reform across Canadian and international contexts.

Topic: PhD to Social Impact: Building a Career Beyond Academia
With a PhD in environmental science and over two decades of experience, Dr. Victoria Gay works at the intersection of research, strategy, and organizational change — helping organizations understand, focus, innovate, and maximize their impact across health, housing, justice, employment, social services, social finance, energy transition, and environmental sustainability.
She has worked with non-profits, governments, start-ups, and major institutions to shape strategy, drive innovation, redefine mandates, build partnerships, support mergers, secure funding, increase awareness, and advance advocacy — all to increase impact.
Advancing gender equity — including health, rights, and opportunity for women, trans, and non-binary people — has been central to her career. While completing her doctorate, Victoria was also working in women’s health research, a commitment that has continued throughout her work. Victoria now works as a strategic consultant to purpose-driven organizations, applying her experience and passion to deliver lasting impact.

The Partnership for Women’s Health Research Canada uses the term women to refer to all people who identify as women. We use trans and non-binary as umbrella terms to refer to people with a wide range of gender identities that are different from the gender they were assigned at birth.
